Research
I have done some research on codes and conventions of documentaries and what types of doumentaries there ar so i know what to include in mine.
thease are some techniques used:
I looked up some different types of doumentaries to see what they are and what they involve and i save one as i thought it was very helpful then i was able to add my own comments and things ive learnt about them from class ans my own research.

The target audience of this doumentary was 25-40, i think this because it is from the new yorker an old brand typically target towards that sork of age group nd it showed a lot of people in thi age group. it was talking about old things and when asmr first came about thiss is the sort of thing that ag group would remember and relate to making them more involved in the documentary.
I really like this documentary. i am also going to make a documentry of ASMR so most of my inspiration will come of this video.
I think a big part of this doumentry was that it was quite soothing i think most of this was because of the music, i like this technique a lot and will try to achive something like this on my video.
There were voice overs that explained about ASMR and how it is made to go with different shots of asmr videos or how they are made, i really like this idea and will try to do something like it on mine as it is very clever to include footage that shows how asmr videos are made or video of asmr.
There was an interview going through the docuentary of someone who makes asmr videos asking her all about the process and i think this works really well, i am going to try to interview some people ask them their views of asmr. in the video clips of youtube videos are played with difernt youtubers making asmr videos, i think this is clever as it shows the diversity in asmr and i think i might do something like this.
During this video there was clips of bob ross with people explaining how they used to like watching him as he was soothing and i think its very clever to inlude different things that would now be classed as asmr.
The documentary was also quite short being 8 minuets and i like that it is short as my documentary will be 5 minuets so this docuentary has helped me to learn the important things to say in the video.
The main techniques usd in this documentary are voice-overs and achrival footage. i think these are very good techniques especcial used together s it can help the person watching to understand about the topic in greater detail becuase it shows old footage related to the topi and you can ave someone explaining what is happening and more about the topic this means the veiwer can understand what the topic is about while watching what it is.

Raised without gender.
This is a documentary aimed at people aged 17-25 who are LGBTQ+ or interested on more information on raising children with no gender. these people could be any gender. i can tell this as it is made by vice and although they make a wide range of doumentarys they are normally aimed for this age group.
The documentary was really good and put together two show the differnt sides of the topic and i think i am going to do something like that on mine.
I think the video was very clever with the backing music played having different paced of differnt tones of music over different bits to add to whatever was being said, i think im going to try do something like this.
There were a lot of interviews in this video and they used the audio from some of them to go over other clips, i am going to do something like this as it is a very clever idea that helps the audience and means that you can show more information in a short time.
They inerviewed many differnet people for this documentary showing differnt points of view to get lots of information on the topic. i am going to do this on my doumentary. as it is good to get all aspects and all sides to the topic to further explain it.
This docuentary ws half an hour long, not long for a doumentary but long for what i am going to do so i will go through it pick out what i think are the most important parts and i will remeber what they are and an only have them or things like them on it.
Vice are well known for doing documentaries and videos on very different topics, videos like their series of two drag queens or their series about weed but there style of being different also goes to the style of the documentaries as there are not many techniuqe used or codes and conventions applied to in this video. One of the techniques used a lot are interviews as that was their main way of getting information on the topic, they did direct and indirect interviews to everyone they could from children to professtionals.
Conclusion
These documentaries are very differnent from eachother they had a lot of simalarties.
One difference is the target audiences, one was an older audience while another was a younger group of people although both adverts are aimed at a wide range of people. both topics effect a very diverse number of people but they are so differnt.
The music in both documentaries are very diffrent as one only has quite slow reling music while the other ha a wide range of differnt tunes used but although they are bth very different they are used for the same thing, to make the audience feel more connected to the video and more interested in it.
ASMR
I am going to look at lots of differnt opinons on asmr and find out all about it.
I have been looking through definitions of asmr made throughout recent years and it shows the progresstion of asmr and how it is accepted in the community and how it is perceived.
"Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. A feeling that is produced when listening to certain sounds and/or looking at certain visuals. The majority of people who experience ASMR don't mention it to their peers. I can almost guarantee that, you, reading this paragraph, has not mentioned ASMR to anyone you know. Most likely because you think they will think you're weird. We all feel the same way!"
this was the oldest one i found that someone wrote in early 2014, it shows that asmr was thought of as strange and embarrassing.
"ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.
ASMR Is typically a video consisting of a person whispering, smacking, eating, or making other relaxing sounds.
Some people however, find ASMR gross, creepy, or even scary.
ASMR has taken over YouTube in recent years. Even with some videos getting millions of views."
this was from 2017 showing that 4 years later people still were very much in to asmr and it had grown but was still thought of gross and creepy.
"An acronym for “Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.”
thease are some techniques used:
- Actuality in relation to documentary films.
- Voice-over.
- Direct and indirect interviews.
- Archival footage.
- Re-enactment.
- Montage.
- Exposition.
I looked up some different types of doumentaries to see what they are and what they involve and i save one as i thought it was very helpful then i was able to add my own comments and things ive learnt about them from class ans my own research.
Expository Documentary:
Typically address the spectators directly through an on-screen commentator or off-screen narration., there are facts and lots of different views. Examples of this is Blue planet and Dynasties.Blue planet is an expository documentary because it uses a voice over to give information to the viewer. These types of documentary often make liberal use of interviews, b-roll, and archival footage. They are also clever as they make the viewer have an emotional connection to the subject. this makes the viewer feel like they've learnt a lot.

Participatory:
this type of documentary includes a lot of the presenter and is quite biased to their opinion therefore it can be easily maniupulated to only show one side so to help malinipulate the audience in to having the same views as the film maker. this makes the viewer feel like theyve seen a lot and they most of the time endup agreeing and seeing the topic from the film makers opinion.

Observational Documentary:
- Capturing the spontaneity and uninhibited flow of life and events as they happen.
- Often adopts the visual language of fictional film intended to articulate continuous
time and space (e.g. diverse camera angles, shot/reverse shot, close-ups, pans and tilts)
this makes the viewer feel like they are seeing tings they wouldnt normally.

Reflexive Documentary:
- Self-conscious or self-reflexive style addresses the process of representation
itself and often foregrounds the relationship between the filmmaker and the spectators, as well as between the filmmaker and the subjects.
- Some reflexive films are autobiographical -- the filmmaker may appear on screen
or talk to the audience in a voice-over. Others are more formally reflexive and highlight the relationship between cinema and the world.
this makes the viewer feel reflective.
this makes the viewer feel reflective.
Experimental Documentary:
- Documentaries that donʼt easily fit any of the other categories. Often they draw on allied art forms (painting, dance, sculpture, photography, etc.) and can even incorporate elements of fiction.
- this makes the viewer feel like they've learnt something really different and weird.
Comparing two documentaries
I am going to compare to documentaries to get insiration for my documentary.

The sole purpose of ASMR is to relax people. The ASMR community is constantly growing on Youtube. Ideally, ASMR videos are meant to give the viewer a relaxing tingle at the back of their head and/or spine. ASMR videos usually involve one or more of the following things:
• Gentle whispering
• Relaxing hand movements
• Smacking of the lips
• Nail tapping/scratching on hard surfaces such as tables
• Brushing sounds
• Etc."

this was a top very good definiton of asmr, it has helped me to see what asmr is about without including any opinions. I now know what its for and the main things included to be asmr.
The next thing i did was watch asmr videos and saw all of the comments on them to see what people think of asmr or what responses the creators get.
i watchd some og gibi asmr's videos although they are almost all over 30 mins she has 1.6million subscibers who watch everyone of her videos multpul times but a lot of them say theyve never finished a video as the asmr makes them so tired they just fall asleep.
Most comments say things like "loved this video it made me feel so relaxed" or they talk about how much they like the person who made the videos as they feel so relaxed listinging to them it causes a bond. there are still some people who think its creepy or weird and you can tell though some comments although it seems to be mostly an the older generations that done understand it. one comment said this " Mum: what are you watching? Me: a girl do my makeup. Mum:I just wanted a normal child" things like this are seen as a joke but it shows that asmr is still viewed as strange i think this will never go away as ive learnt that some people dont feel asmr.

Great start Alice. You have outlined the conventions of documentaries, to develop this further i would like you to theorise how each convention can communicate something to the viewer. Similarly, I would like you to add to your modes of documentary section. Recall the presentations you did on the different modes and add to this post, examples of each mode and the affect they have on the viewer.
ReplyDeleteA strength of your work is the comparison of the two ASMR documentaries. You have discussed the uses of documentary techniques and even linked it to what you plan to do in your own work, i'd like to see more of this through out the project.
Your secondary research is effective and you've gained a lot of information, what I can’t see is where you got this information from? Was it a website, book, another documentary? Very much like the caparison above, i would like to see how this will support your own documentary i.e. has this help with writing a voice over or coming up with question for an interview?
