How do creative choices effect our perceptions.

‘Creative choices’ is a very interesting choice of words as it is so vague it could mean so much. I take it to mean different things like how someon edits a video or graphic, what they incude in a video or cut out, how something is set out or more. Some simples creative choices can effect so much but be so small, for exmple in a show I was watching it’s ment to show teenagers looking really bad so they only include bits filed of them being mean to their parents or partying but then thought the show it adds videos from the same day but where they are nicer to make it seem like they are getting so much nicer and more responsible but really they are the same and haven’t changed the audience just didn’t see this side of them when they first were introduced s didn’t think they could be nice.

I think overall this question really makes you thik and analyse anyting youre watching, every bit of media I have been consuming in the last week I have just been thinking about this question ad whats been done to make me think what, something im on a lot is instagram and even posting photos on there I make choices on what to include to change someones perception of me or what im like, even something as simple as wearing my glasses in photos more makes people think im more friendly as it connects me the stereotype of people with glasses. I think this is really interesting how everyone automaticlly thinks of the stereotypes of something unless proven that something doesn’t fit in to this for example when someone just looks at me in a street old people see me and they are scared or will try to avoid me but I always smile to show im not scary, this one small act of a smile breaks the stereotype they automatically put me in to and that little choice of mine to smilie changed all they thought about me.

A creative choice I notice a lot that always makes me laugh and is so simple but can change the enitre mood of a video or show or whatever is just a small zoom in, for example a youtuber I watch danny gonzalez always uses it and it’s always very clever, he just while talking to get his point across zooms just the tiniest bit closer in to his face, this could last for litteraly 2 seconds or while he finishes his sentence but just that small quick differnce can make me laugh, it can help him portray what hes trying to and it can make the video that bit more interesting to watch making me pay more attention to it and keep watching it.

Another creative choice that I think is clever are small non diagetic shouds to empasise things or portray something, for example when theres a small violin noise to show something is scary or theres a plot going on. Somehting I always think about when I think about non diagetic sound is this scene in archer where a character has someone plotting against her to make her sound crazy but when she discovers somethig new about the plot or about the plot itself theres non diagetic sound to show that this thing shes discovered is not good and is suspictious but the reason I think of this show is because she reacts to the sound and I've never seen someone react to it before but she jumps when it goes of the first time and the second time she looks around worried and whispers to herself “it’s okay.. It's just non diagetic sound” but it just makes me think because that shows that non digetic sound is only used to change the perspective of the veiwer as the acters or charaters can’t actually hear it normally and it doesn’t effect them so this small sound played for a couple seconds can make the audience scared or worried or it can give them more information about the scene, it’s really so clever.

Creative choices are used to change perception by chosing what clips the adueince sees, it choses what we see about a character or a scene changing our perception of whats happening or what we think of someone, it can do this very easlily. for example on a show where it shows the progresstion of a character it will show different things of them and not show others to make you think they have changed and to directly to change a persons perception on the character.

There are different creative choices that make big differences, in every different documentary mode thees something the film maker can do to change the pereptions someone has on something.
For example in participatory documntaries they can just show the bad things that happen to them and use their opinion a lot as normally they are doing a documentary doing something a normal person wouldnt do so just their opinion on what its like to do what ever the documentary topic is, the person watching can only rely on this persons opinion as fact as they have no other information on it.

Theory and theorists
Todorov's narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored.
this theory is not very relevant to documentarys but i think it's very interesting that this theory can aplly itself to so many differnt things.

John Grierson defined the term documentary as, ‘creative treatment of actuality,’ in 1926. this shows that documentaries are just in other words creative ways to show facts so a creative way can be using the media of video and making a film.
